I have always believed that life is eternal. From a small child, I believed in reincarnation, with endless opportunities to ‘get it right’! In my mind, this is what God as Love would do. Now my language is; we have endless opportunities to awaken to who we are.
I have always believed that we are part of something greater than our personal self – and Unity has given me the space to really dive into that thinking, to deepen my understanding and experience of this. If life is eternal, then love is eternal, as Love is the underlying truth about us all, the energy that connects us; and, for me, that in which we ‘live and move and have our being.’ The invitation in life, for me, is to awaken to this and live this, each in our own unique and beautiful way. Of course, many of us put a thick ‘book cover’ over our light, love and truth. Especially when we have suffered trauma and abuse. The sad thing is we then believe that the cover we carry, that which we believe protects us, is who we are. It becomes like armour or a shield, separating us from each other, our True self and God as Love. We believe the cover we wear is what we are, when we are in Truth, Light, Life, Love: eternal beings. When my father passed on many years ago, he came back to me clearly in a dream, three days after his death. I knew he had returned to me to show me he was good and still with us, just out of sight. In my dream, I rushed up to him, put my arms around him, said, ‘Dad you are not dead!’ and he disappeared. I felt at the time it took all his energy to appear to me in a way that I would recognise as him; and I was grateful. In the midst of my grief, I experienced abiding comfort, for I knew he had simply moved into ‘another room’ as Myrtle Fillmore, our co-founder described. Now, very recently, my niece has also passed on. This beautiful soul who experienced deep trauma in her life, could not find her way through the pain and did not believe in her beauty and light. There is deep sadness and grief in the family as we mourn and miss her. And deep, deep sadness that she suffered such trauma. Our prayer is that others do not suffer as my niece did and the right help is found for those who do. We also know that she is now held, guided, and loved by angels; and by beautiful beings who are helping her through her pain, enabling her to return to her awareness of her True self; that of beauty, light, love and laughter. When she is ready, we are sure we will know her soul is free and this sustains us. Whether you think with me that life is eternal and our soul goes on, or not, the deep faith that sustains us is the abiding awareness that, as Jesus said, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:30). We are forever one with all that God is. Martha Smock, a former Daily Word editor, wrote in an article (found in her book, ‘Fear Not’); “We have thought of ourselves as separate, as praying to God, when all the time it remains a matter of unity. What God is, we are. Back of all that appears is a spiritual sameness, a state of being one. The number one denotes unity.” We mourn and miss our loved ones. Yet it is our faith in our Oneness, that life is eternal, that strengthens, guides, supports and enables us to know, at one level, we are never alone; and, who and what we really are, Love, never dies. This phrase was made popular through the film Avatar! which I highly recommend if you have not seen it. We are invited in the story, to see beyond what we physically see with our human eyes, to the deeper truth and Being that lies within us all. In Unity we use the phrase: The Christ in me beholds the Christ in you. The key here, is that we are called to know the Christ energy (our Divine Self) in us first, as the Truth of our being. Jesus is the perfect example of this for us to follow. For, from this profound awareness shift, as Jesus showed us, we can then behold the Christ energy in another, as their Truth of Being, and call it forth. As we surrender all that we are not, we become all that we truly are. The divine shines through us all. In discussing this in our first SEE class (Spiritual Education and Enrichment study) on Metaphysics recently, I invited the students to see beyond and through what Vladimir Putin is showing to the world, in the living out of his fears, to the deeper Truth of his being. Can we see him as he is seen by God - whole, perfect, loving, wise, unimpacted by his human experiences and known in his Truth. I believe that if enough of us can do this together, hold the Truth of his Being in our hearts and minds from the Truth of our Being, he will connect with this for himself. We are not here to fix the problem but realise the solution. Let us see with 'real eyes' his Truth of Being. And at the same time hold the space of love, support and peace for all those who are impacted by his human actions. Together we make a difference in the world. Rev.
