As we move into the darkest time of the year, for me it means taking time each day to withdraw from the world. Rather like the trees withdraw their energy and tap into the earth for their sustenance, we, too, can tune into the divine presence within. Less showy and perhaps more in tune with nature. Yes, there may be parties and celebrations. But I can also take time to be still and reflect on what Advent means to me – a time to prepare, once more, for the rebirth of the Christ light in me. Every year I experience this slightly differently. Each year, as it draws to a close, has offered me something to reflect on, to understand more deeply, to know about myself. The month of December, with its longer nights, offers me the chance to acknowledge and embrace this. Are you finding you have less energy for activities and demands, and need more quiet time to regroup and recentre? If so, I encourage you to take the time – this is for you and only you can do this. When we listen to ourselves and our needs, we are more able to be present to those around us: even enjoy the parties and celebrations. This Advent, take the time you need to be still and honour the quiet times. Then, as the year ends and the days lengthen again, you may find that you regain your energy and desire to be out in the world once more. As we do what is right for us, we show up right in the world.
