I was driiving back from a retreat in Devon when I managed to turn a two hour journey into a four hour one !! I lost my way on the country lanes, I had decided to do without the sat nav and at first I was fine enjoying the meandering lanes and unknown vistas. Eventually I arrived at a sign pointing to Taunton which seemed like a good way to head for!
I stopped and put on the Sat Nav expecting to connect with the M5 and ‘fly’ home. Oh no, when I reached the M5 junction it was CLOSED .

The Sat Nav kept saying ‘Make a U turn’ which was imposible due to my being on a dual caraigeway! So I ignored it and I thought I knew it was no good going back anyway!
However eventually having consulted the road map I conceded and returned the five miles to Taunton to find the correct diversion sign for the A38 which I recognised.

By now I had turned the Sat Nav on and off numerous times !!
I think that the sat nav is quite a teacher in some ways !
It offers you clear guidance but when you do not take it it does not get cross with you and when you fail to follow its directions if tries to find another way for you.

Maybe its like the guidance that we sometimes receive from that inner voice when we turn to it but which we also often choose to ignore or overide but that does not seem to get mad at us either..

Its usually us that gets ‘mad’ at ourselves ….. strange!! I wonder why?

My favourite quotation is from the poet Goethe: ‘When you think ill of a man you make him worse than he is, when you think well of a man you make him better than he is.’

Sometimes I find this attitude easier to apply in principle than in practice, but at least it does point to the need to be aware that our thoughts affect other people more than we may realise. At least it guides my thinking towards some quality in someone that my thinking is judging.

Generally we judge, I think because we are under the misapprehension that by pointing out someone’s’ shortcomings that it will somehow improve them! The knowledge that thinking ‘well of a person’ will improve them, does encourage us to make that effort. Another reason often for ‘thinking ill’ of others is that it makes us feel better than them. However, this is counterproductive. At some level we are all ‘one’ and the subconscious does not separate us, therefore, our indictment of someone else rebounds upon ourselves!.

Learning to be compassionate and loving towards others’ behaviour, and our own, is no easy task but awareness does prepare the way.

ALL PRAYED UP!

On Friday I set out to travel to Riyadh on business with the aim of writing this blog on the plane. The decision to go was made at the last moment so, I arranged my flights and hotel, packed my bags was ready in good time and got to the airport with no problems. By the time my wife texted me to wish me god speed, I was happily ensconced in the lounge with a coffee and part two of my breakfast and doing the Telegraph crossword. The flight was called more or less on time and I made my way to the gate only to find that my visa was out of date. So what’s that got to do with Unity? W ell, I guess it shows that we can make lots of careful preparations but, in the end it’s the unexpected that catches us out. How do we prepare for the unexpected? By being ‘all prayed up’. I could have chosen to remonstrate with the airport staff or got really stressed out about the wasted time and money but, a quick call to my secretary and everything was cancelled with only a very small cost and the ticket can be re-used. I got to sample how to get out of an airport when you don’t fly and also got to attend weekend events my wife had planned that I would otherwise have missed. We may not know what best for us but the Universe does – stay ‘all prayed up’ and whatever happens, the result will be for our best good. (Paul Mapletoft)

I am a vessel through which God’s work is done

This is a reminder that God within works through us and when we are uncertain who we should help or what we should do we need only look inside. The Daily Word also reminds us that not everything is ours to do, yes we can say no to something. Reading these words serves as an important reminder, I do not need to carry the world on my shoulders. The important work that is mine to do will be shown to me and sometimes we have to pass on the baton to someone else. Like wise other times we are passed the baton and we know that this is the right thing to do.

I claim my wholeness as a perfect child of God

I said this to myself this week, I was on the tube, it was hot and I didn’t feel very well I said to myself ‘I am whole and a perfect child of God’ . As I repeated the phrase to myself I felt calmer and the pain I previously had subsided. I took my mind off the hot carriage, the noise and the hustle, knowing at that moment one perfect truth that I am whole. I know this is a deeply personal experience but I wonder if anyone else has experienced something similar.

One of my friends uses this phrase to help her with self esteem to remind her that she is a perfect child of God and not to beat herself up about not working hard enough. Another way to use this phrase is to remember that everyone we meet is a child of God and is whole and perfect. If we see people through these eyes we regard each person with wonder and see the unique beauty in each person.

I am gratitude in action!

Thank you! As I write this I am travelling back from a dear friend’s wedding. I feel immense gratitude for having this friendship and the love of my friends. For being able to see him and his wife so happy and spending time partying after the ceremony. It is when we attend such a wonderful event as a wedding, the birth of a child or other joyous occasion that we remember gratitude. However there are really hundreds of ‘ordinary miracles’ that happen everyday such as the beauty of nature and the fact we are all here on this planet at all. Thousands of years ago we would have been thankful that the sun had risen in the morning, in some countries people are thankful for running water, food and electricity, just go a day or so without the shower working and you will find that you too are thankful when you next have a shower.

So how can we practice gratitude? One way is to make a list of things you are graceful for. Each day or week write down three things you are grateful for, this could be seeing family and friends or even the bacon sandwich you had for breakfast. As you write you will begin to notice more things to be thankful for and your list may grow and grow.

Just pick one thing, what are you grateful for today?

I am open and willing to change my mind

We can always change our mind, it is not good to hold our beliefs so tight that we are unable to see other points of view. Sometimes when we can not see our way through a situation we need to simply use or ears and our eyes to notice what is around us. Snippets of conversation overheard, a line of a song on the radio, a page of book that randomly falls open may open us up to new possibilities and to guide us to our highest good. Serendipity is our playmate and guides our spirit to find new doors and open windows to worlds we didn’t know existed. It continues to transform our lives day by day in new and inspirational ways. It is only through being open minded to other possibilities that these opportunities come our way.

Look out today for new ways of seeing the world around you.
